Ready to Rev with the Honda Civic Type R 2018

Whether you love it or hate it, the Honda Civic Type R  is not for the faint-hearted. With its ‘out there’ design and powerful demeanor, it’s a speedy force to be reckoned with. The 2018 design was unveiled just under a year ago at the Geneva Motor Show and has been a hot topic ever since. It reached SA shores earlier this year and as expected, the new Civic Type R caused something of a stir.

Although the Civic Type R has undergone a whole range of upgrades, the question on everybody’s mind is ‘How much faster is it?Speed and stability are a huge deal for vehicles in this class and the pressure to prove the performance capability of a front-wheel-drive has been felt by the likes of the Audi A3, Golf R and of course, the Civic Type R. The Civic Type R bagged the title of the fastest FWD, setting a record lap speed at the renowned Nürburgring track in Germany during April last year.

The new Civic Type R reports higher figures than the outgoing model with a top speed of 272 k/ph and a 0-100 k/ph time of just 5.8 seconds. The Type R gets its power from its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that is turbocharged as well as direct-injected. Torque is unchanged at 400 nm whilst the power figure has risen to 228 kW with a horsepower figure of just over 300.

The Civic Type R still features Brembo brakes through the suspension system has been thoroughly revised. The system has been improved by an Adaptive Damper System and a limited-slip differential. These inclusions max out on control and stability while driving, making for a more appealing drive. Additionally, the suspension has been made up of aluminum components as a weight saving effort which, among other changes, has proved effective as the vehicle weighs in at just 1760kg. The weight advantage coupled with the dynamic engineering provides the Civic Type R with a competitive edge.

This high-performance hatchback is not just equipped with all the big-boy racer mechanics but also features the look of an ultimate beast. The new and improved bodywork further enhance the sporty theme with vertical scoops near the fog lights and a center scoop on the hood. There are flared fenders too and at the back, the inclusion of a wing for both aesthetics and stability. Also, the inclusion of a third exhaust pipe also has functionality with Honda reporting that it is designed to reduce booming in the cabin. Inside, the vehicle sports red seats, leather-upholstered steering and technological inclusions such as a 7-inch infotainment system that is compatible with Apple Car Play.

The versatility of this car is championed by its adaptive dampers allowing for 3 distinct drive modes. The Comfort, Sport, and R+ allow for a better drive by enabling the driver to select a mode based on conditions of the road. Changes made during mode shifts include chassis stiffness adjustment, the effort of steering and throttle response. The Type R has 3 personalities and we love them all.

The arrival of the Honda Civic Type R is much anticipated, having already launched in several regions worldwide. Pricing is expected to be around Rs. 627,900, just a slight increase from its predecessor. We’re expecting great things from this vehicle and can’t wait to see it rocketing down South African roads.
